Abstract

The AM-Her objects are observationally characterized by their strongly polarized optical cyclotron emission arising from shock-heated plasma formed near the white dwarf surface as plasma accretes from their companion stars.  Most of the properties of AM-Her, particularly the properties of the magnetic field, are determined from the measured ratio of circular to linear polarizations.  On time-scale much larger than the oscillation period, several of the relationships between polarization and the properties of the magnetic field for on-axis time-dependent oscillating shocks are being quantified and discussed.
