Managing Jordanian Nurse Migration to the Arab Gulf States
Abstract
The migration of nurses from Jordan to the Arab Gulf States (AGSs) has occurred for decades, although substantial increases have been noted since the 1990s. A survey of 2039 Jordanian nurses in the AGSs identified that this trend in mobility is largely unchanged. Most of the nurses in this study migrated initially to the AGSs for employment, often after unsatisfactory employment in Jordan prior to leaving. Pull factors to migrate were very strong, although the opportunity for employment was often perceived as a motive to move. While high intentions to return is apparent, this is unlikely to occur given the levels of negative expectations regarding work in Jordan. However more Jordanian nurses are expressing dissatisfaction of work and life environment in some AGSs, which pushing them to keep thinking of moving. Policy makers and nurse leaders in Jordan and the AGSs are urged to use these data to formulate strategies aimed at retaining Jordanian nurses in their workplaces.
