"EOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEM GIS AND NORMATIVE MODEL AS A PLANNING TOOL FOR THE MUNICIPAL SOLID WASTE COLLECION YSTEM"
Abstract
This research presets a quantitative planning model to determine the optimal feasible pattern of a municipal solid waste collection system, based on the criterion of distance minimization. This optimal pattern has been accomplished using geographic a information system GIS technique and binary integer programming modeling. The results reveal that the solid waste collection system could be enhanced through improved routing of collection vehicles. Geographic information systems and integer programming techniques are shown to be an effective method for developing the least costly route that the solid waste collection vehicle can take to visit all neighborhoods in the municipal area and then return to the basic depot. The analysis indicates that the application of geographic information system techniques and integer programming modeling makes it possible to achieve improvements in the solid waste collection system which can save money and time.
