OBJECTIVE: Worldwide transmissionof the novel coronavirus (COVID-19)and related morbidity and mortality has presenteda global challenge for several reasons. Onesuch underrecognized and unaddressed aspectis the emotional health problems that medicalstaff have developed during this pandemic. Thepurpose of this one-month study was to examineanxiety levels and sleep quality of 100 medicalstaff members who worked in medical clinicstreating COVID-19 patients in Saudi hospitalsand to investigate the association of both anxietylevels and sleep quality with age, sex, anddistinctive demographics.MATERIALS AND METHODS: We investigatedanxiety levels and sleep quality of 100 medicalstaff members (age range 20-60 years) whoworked in medical clinics treating COVID-19 patientsin Saudi hospitals and the association ofboth anxiety levels and sleep quality with age, sex, and distinctive demographics. Anxiety levelsand sleep quality were measured using theSelf-Rating Anxiety Scale and the PittsburghSleep Quality Index (SAS and PSQI, respectively).RESULTS: A significant increment in anxietyand poor sleep quality was found in medical staffcaring for COVID-19 patients. Anxiety levels infemales were higher than males; however, poorsleep quality was somewhat higher in males vs.females but did not vary between age groups.Age was significantly negatively correlated withanxiety symptoms; individuals < 40 years oldvs. ≥ 40 had more significant anxiety levels. Weobserved that medical staff with top-level salariesdemonstrated a significant correlation (p =0.028) between poor sleep quality and ill effectsvs. those who had lower pay rates. A correlationbetween income and anxiety was not found.CONCLUSIONS: The higher the probabilityand intensity of exposure to coronavirus patients, the more noteworthy the danger that medicalstaff will experience the ill effects of mentalissues.
