Abstract :
Mosque architecture in Jordan has witnessed remarkable development in recent years. Minarets, as an important element in the mosque's design, still have the Jordanian designers' attention, despite losing their traditional primary function. This study displayed information regarding the architecture of the minaret, its names, meanings, and the historical background of the traditional mosques and minarets architecture in Jordan. The research is also based on a comparative analysis of twelve selected case studies of mosques built after 2000 and designed by Jordanian architects to understand the common architectural trends for minaret design in contemporary mosques by focusing on the analysis of the forms, functions, elements, and characteristics of contemporary minarets. Finally, this paper concluded that most architects show attention toward designing mosques in general as well as minarets in particular to follow the modern approach with respect to the traditional Islamic architecture vocabulary. In addition to that, there is a transformation of the contemporary minaret’s form, components, and building materials. These results aimed to clarify the features of the transformation of the architectural design of contemporary minarets in Jordan in order to provide a helpful reference for architects, designers, and mosque patrons.
