Article abstract: Reverse Osmosis (RO) is a promising brackish water desalination method. However, the overall performance metrics of RO system such as water productivity and product salinity can be affected by the seasonal temperature variations over an operational year. As a result, this article seeks to conduct a complete performance analysis of the RO process-based brackish water desalination, taking the temperature fluctuation into consideration. The RO system of Arab Potash Company has been considered as a case study which was designed to desalinate ground water. The simulation is carried out using a detailed RO model established by the same author. In this regard, the simulation presents the fluctuated performance indicators of RO system as a response to the temperature variations between January to December of 2022 at fixed design feed water conditions— including salinity, pump pressure, and feed flow rate. The findings demonstrate distinct fluctuations in water productivity, product salinity and specific energy consumption across the time period. According to statistics, the water productivity is at its highest during the summer when the product salinity is lowest. To assure a fixed water productivity of RO system (designed value) for each operational temperature, an optimisation framework is embedded in the RO model to investigate the optimal pump pressure and water flow rate. Thus, a complete guidance of optimal conditions for any water temperature has been developed for the operators of RO system to maintain a fixed productivity along the operational year.
