Abstract

This study aims to clarify the attitudes and motives of mothers towards daughters of intellectual disabilities hysterectomy.  A self administered questionnaire consisted of 24 items and one open ended question was used to collect the data. The questionnaire was sent to nine special educational centers’ directors who, in their turn, gave the questionnaires to mothers of daughters with intellectual disabilities in these centers.  Ninety seven mothers from Amman, Zarqa, Karak, and Tafileh completed the questionnaires. The result showed that mothers were generally against hysterectomy of their intellectually disabled daughters.  Moreover, the study reveals that there were no significant differences related to various variables: ( daughters’ rank in family,  the age and degree of disability of the daughters with intellectual disability, parental educational qualification, parental age, place of residence, families’ monthly income, and number of family members). It concludes, also, that the most common reasons that parental remunerated for a hysterectomy of their daughters with intellectual disability were: fear of rape, mothers’ relief from taking continuous care of their intellectually disabled daughters, illegal pregnancy, avoiding embarrassment, and reducing period pain.
