Abstract
This research discusses the environmental problems that threaten the future of the mankind, especially the people who live in big or overcrowded cities. It aims to discuss the means, which may help to preserve the environmental safety in Arab cities and it, specifically, focuses on the legal mechanism, i.e. the role of the legislation in this regard. It highlights the need for the enactment of comprehensive and strict laws and regulations as well as the need for new programs and policies of co-operation between governmental and private bodies concerning environmental protection and creation of environmental awareness, which has become very essential nowadays.
It aims to show that law has a major role to play in managing the urban environment and hence in reducing pollution. It generally focuses on the issue in Arab cities and particularly considers the Jordan ’s capital city, Amman, as an example.

ملخص
هذا البحث يناقش المشاكل البيئية التي تهدد مستقبل الجنس البشري، وخاصة أولئك الناس الذين يعيشون في مدن كبيرة أو مزدحمة. كذلك يناقش الوسائل التي يمكن أن تساعد في الحفاظ على سلامة البيئة في المدن العربية ويركز بالتحديد على الآلية القانونية؛ أي على الدور الذي يمكن أن يقوم به التشريع في هذا المجال ويؤكد الحاجة إلى سـنِّ قوانين شاملة وصارمة، وكذلك الحاجة إلى وجود برامج وسياسات للتعاون بين الهيئات الحكومية والخاصة بخصوص الحماية البيئية وخلق الوعي البيئي الذي أصبح ضرورياً في الوقت الحاضر. وباختصار، فإن هذا البحث يهدف إلى إبراز الدور الذي يلعبه القانون في إدارة البيئـة الحضريـة، وبالتالي في التخفيف من التلوث. ويركز هذا البحث على المدن العربية وبالتحديد على العاصمة الأردنية عمَّان
